In other words, the romance takes a back seat. Personally, I enjoy books that have the romantic aspect of the plot toned down more. My only complaint is in regards to the romance. The author integrates the setting element of the plot immensely well, and creates an immersive and thrilling experience all the way through the story. The setting is inspired by Chinese culture, but there is an interesting combination of different Middle-Eastern as well as Japanese customs too. However, the story unfolds into something that is completely its own. That description is pretty accurate in terms of the book’s plot. Spin the Dawn has been marketed as a mash-up between Mulan and Project Runway. Author Elizabeth Lim weaves a fascinating and enthralling story in this retelling of Mulan. ![]()
